Engl - Dario Fo and Franca Rame's "Mistero Buffo" at 20 july 2009, Naples
In Mistero buffo, Dario Fo, alone on stage, reruns a thousand-year history of power - it's abuses, but also its forms of popular denouncement - through a superbly constructed narration of different episodes. The connection between the stories - some biblical, others medieval jester like - is the actor himself. Through the particular use of voice, the construction of a language that mixes dialects with onomatopoeic words, the creation of a unique relationship with the public, and a singular combination of mime and body, Fo presents the world a total new way of doing theatre. The philogical recovery of the medieval theatrical tradition - the subtitle of the piece is "popular jesting" and the invention of new expressive forms (such as grammelot), are placed into a project of rediscovery and the diffusion of a popular counter-culture. For the presentation in Naples, Fo offers a particular assemble of Mistero buffo mixing in some little known stories and episodes into the composition.
