Engl - Saint Andrew's Celebration in Amalfi 27 June 2009

Saint Andrew, patron saint of Amalfi, is honoured several times a year, but in June celebrations are by far the most spectacular. They entail a group of fishermen running up a steep 62-step staircase with the statue on their shoulders!
Following a solemn procession through town, which commemorates the defeat of Barbarossa's pirate fleet in 1544, fishermen take the holy statue of the saint back to the Duomo as fast as they can, believing their effort is symbolic of strength and faith.
Fish in all its forms - fresh, fried, stewed, boiled - accompanies the celebrations, which conclude in the evening with a firework show.

Engl - Sunday at Pausilypon...The Seiano Cave in 5 july 2009, Naples

Nature-historical itineraries to discover the imperial Posilipo. The tour starts from the Seiano Caves, ancient gallery with Roman walls and Borbon arches, that connect Coroglio to Baia di Trentaremi. Walk through all of its 770 meteres in half-light, thenat its end the light. The Roman ruins, the Odeion, where Virgilio himself has read his verses, and the great Roman Theatre. The tour proceeds to what remains of Pollione's Villa. Admire then Trentaremi Bay, the island of Nisida and the Phlegrean Fields from a new perspective. You can choose between a ride on Aquavision, a boat with a transparent bottom, or, for the more sporty, snorkeling in the protected area "Parco Sommerso di gaiola."

Engl - From July to September, it's a long summer with Jazz Festival Circuit

From July to September, the third edition of the Jazz Festival Circuit runs through Naples and its province as one long, intense jazz shiver. Many emotions in one, bringing together seven festivals into one celebration of sounds and impressions. A journey into music, but also into culture, tourism, wine&food. Because, as music-lovers know well, music is often "the" reason but also a mere pretext.
Bearing this in mind, the Councillorship to Tourism of the Province of Naples, in collaboration with the Councillorship to Tourism and the Cultural Heritage of the Campania Regional Government, offers its Circuit to jazz lovers all over Italy, a much-appreciated event among experts and jazz lovers which can thus get an important place on the rich scene of summer events.
The circuit for the promotion, spreading and production of jazz music, born out of an operational agreement involving public institutions and local private companies, and put in place in collaboration with EPT, the Tourist Board of the Province of Naples, presents the most important seasons of jazz music in Naples and its province.
The seven "stops" along the Jazz Circuit go from Naples (Napoli Jazz Festival) to Pomigliano d'Arco (Pomigliano Jazz Festival), Vico Equense (Vico Jazz Festival), Sorrento (Sorrento Jazz), Ischia (Ischia Jazz Festival), San Giorgio a Cremano (Nick La Rocca European Jazz Festival) and Torre del Greco (Divino Jazz Festival). A true network of festivals, in which each one makes its artistic choices in complete autonomy, while participating in a circuit that offers itself as a new jazz arena in Italy.
The Jazz Festival Circuit is then a call to discover this 'elite' music which is becoming more and more popular among young and very young music lovers. It is also a master key to the landscapes, beauties, treasures and delicacies of a territory that, alongside well known sites and opportunities, holds a wealth of unexplored potentials.
Ms Giovanna Martano, the Councillor to Tourism of Naples Province states that "With its seven festivals, the Jazz Circuit project contributes to establishing a prestigious musical tradition, in particular concerning jazz, but is also an important tool of promotion and development for the less known areas and sites in our Province". "Beside the important, quality programmes of the festivals in the network – states the art director of the Circuit, Mr Onofrio Piccolo – the Jazz Festival Circuit also constitutes an important event for the whole territory, that may act as a lever for future developments of jazz music in Italy thanks to the growing importance of the festival".
Mr Dario Scalabrini, Director of EPT in Naples, remarks that "Combining the great attractor of music with the environmental, archaeological, historical and cultural heritage of our territory has proved to be a very successful idea, as shown by the success of the first two editions of the Festival. The Jazz Circuit is now a well-established reality, which can act as a lever for the growth of our tourism". The Jazz Card will be proposed again this year, a unique opportunity to enjoy discounted prices on concert tickets, special packages offered by local agencies and on several integrated tourist services (hotels, public transport, bookshops, clubs, cinemas, etc.).
The third edition of the Circuit will be closed by the Orchestra Napoletana di Jazz, conducted by Mario Raja, with a special guest. This year, however, the location will be a brand-new one: the final concert will be held at Villa Ammaturo in Giugliano, one of the most important assets confiscated from the Camorra in the last few years and managed by the S.O.L.E. Consortium. A stage with an extraordinary symbolic value, then, which joins musical and civil awareness. Following the success of the past editions, which gathered over 150 thousand people in 79 events with 134 concerts, the Jazz Festival Circuit presents itself to the Italian music summer with a programme over 32 days, about 400 artists, over 50 concerts – 15 of which with free entrance - and several related events.

The project Paestum Festival includes ten days of events with musical exhibitions, both of classical and light music, lirical nights, dance and theater shows, as well as cinema events. Engl - Summer shows at Terme di Caracalla from 1 july to 9 august 2009, Rome

Fans of opera music and ballet surely got already tickets for one amongst three shows that in the summer will be kept in the location of Terme di Caracalla (Caracalla Thermal Baths). Shows will begin in the 1st of July when, in one of the most charming places that evidence the age-old beauty of Ancient Rome, reflectors will light for a week on the trasposition of the Shakespeare masterpiece "Sogno di una notte di mezza estate" (A Midsummer Night's Dream): the Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera of Rome stages a not-to-be-missed show, dancing on the music by Mendelssohn- Bartholdy. The second meeting with the "big" music will take place from the 14th of July to the 6th of August, and it will deal with the "Tosca" by Puccini. In the end, last but not least, you will have the "Carmen" by Bizet, from the 29th of July to the 9th of August; the main actor will be the very famous Argentinian tenor Marcelo Alvarez. So, you'll have the possibility to choose among three great shows, that will conquer both opera lovers and inexperienced peolple, who will surely be transported by the beauty of the location and from the famous names on the bill, to live more and more their Roman summer.

Engl - Leuciana Festival from 12 june to 25 july in San Leucio

Exploiting the extraordinary monuments and historic buildings of the region of Campania with a view to enhancing an historic, cultural and artistic heritage which knows no equal in Europe. From eleven years, the Leuciana Festival presents the very best of Italian and international culture and entertainment focusing on using the history and traditions of the past as an indispensable point of departure for an exploration of the future which encompassed both "highbrow" and "low brow" culture, a milieu which was one of the leading features of the reign of King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. The 2009 leitmotif is music: the vocalist Bobby McFerrin, the record breaking musical Notre-Dame de Paris, and a performance of Franz Liszt's Dante's Symphony, a refined composition focusing on the story of the Divine Comedy.

Engl - The Eruption of Vesuvius

On the morning of August 24, A.D. 79, a great noise was heard in the area around Vesuvius. A mushroom shaped cloud of gas and volcanic rock rose high in the air, darkening the sky. A shower of burning cinders and rock fragments covered Pompei. It lasted until the next day, caving in roofs and claiming its first victims. The Pompeians tried to take shelter in the houses or hoped to escape by walking on top of the layers of pumice stones constantly being formed, which by this point were more than 2 meters deep. But at dawn on August 25, a violent explosion of toxic gases and burning cinders devastated the city. It infiltrated everything, taking those who were trying to flee by surprise and making every form of defense vain. A shower of very fine ash was deposited everywhere to a depth of more than six meters, enveloping everything and adhering to the forms of the bodies and even the folds of their clothes. When, two days later, the fury of the elements abated, the entire area had a different aspect: a white blanket covered everything; the Sarno river was trying to find its course again after having been filled with volcanic rubble; and the coast, submerged by the material spewed forth by Vesuvius, had encroached on the sea! The whole city was declared off limits, to protect the property of the survivors, but clandestine diggers tried to plunder it anyway. For a long time the human presence was rare and marginal, and only under the emperor Hadrian, around 120 A.D., was at least the road system in the area reopened to traffic. We have an eye-witness report of the catastrophe in a letter from Pliny the Younger to the Roman historian Tacitus, in which he tells about the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, as he was trying to bring aid to the devastated cities. Engl - Pizzafest, Naples, dal 10-set-2009 al 20-set-2009

Naples is the spiritual home of the pizza, and every year in September, the city gets together to celebrate its most famous export. The streets are full of vendors selling their margheritas, calzone and quattro stagioni to passers-by, and the delicious smell of freshly cooked pizza pervades in every district. The 10-day event is probably the largest festival dedicated to the pizza anywhere in the world, and an excellent excuse to gorge on one of the simplest, but most popular, dishes in the world.

Engl - Racconti inediti from 22 june to 30 august 2009, Calabritto

On display fourty original images of the photographer Romano Cagnoni. Born in Pietrasanta, he moved, at an early age, in London, from where he used to send his reports to the editorial offices of Stern, Life, Observer, Times, Newsweek and Paris Match. He has been the first photographer to enter Northern Vietnam with the journalist James Cameron. He has been the first to enter, illegaly, Dakka, Argentina, and Afghanistan to photograph the war in bangladesh, at the Falklands and the Red Armada, to remember also his many reportage on South America and Fidel Castro, Israel but also italy and his native town. The director of the "Times", Harold Evans, in the volume "Pictures on a Page" mentions him among the seven most important photographers in the world.

Engl - The sign of Goya from 16 april to 6 september 2009, in Cava de' Tirreni

On display 80 works of the cicle called "The disasters of war". The series of engravings were realized, starting from 1810, to denounce the horrors of the Napoleonic occupation of Spain, which the artist witnessed. Only Francisco Goya, before the Picasso of Guernica, has managed to express the madness, the disasters and the fear of war with such intensity. The conclusion of the entire production comes to a total pessimism: the 'nothing' projects itself over the tomb, there is no hope even in the afterlife, hell is here on earth.

Engl - Michelangelo in Naples: The Lost Christ Found from 11 may to 12 july in Naples

On exhibition the wooden sculptures of the Christ Crucified, attributed to Michelangelo Buonarotti, made around the year 1495. The small sculputre has been showed to the public, for the first time, in 2004 in Florence. Only after ten years of studies and investigations, the work has been attributed to the Tuscan artist. The work is exceptional for his perfect proportions, inscribable in a circle and a square like the famous Vitruvian man by Leonardo Da Vinci, for the anatomic correctness and sculptural quality that has characterized Michelangelo's art.

Engl - History of Minori

Minori has Roman origins. It was first called "Reginna", then "Reginna Minor" since near it there was a bigger town called "Reginna Maior". During Middle Ages Minori had an important shipyard that produced galleys until 1039. Since 987 it had been made a diocese by Pope John XV and was an Episcopal seat until 1818. It rivalled Amalfi because of its picturesque location, its factories, its orange blossoms: the doges of Amalfi often stayed there and some of them are buried in the Cathedral. An important event is the imprisonment by Salernitano prince Guaimario IV of the second bishop of Minori, Sergio. On April, the 11th, 1597 there was a tragic storm. In 1492, 1528 and 1656 there were several plagues that brought in the town death and terror. The plague of 1656 made 355 people die: it was a third of the population.

A series of halls explore the evolution of the machinery of pasta production, from the earliest stone machines to modern industrial mass-production facilities. Other rooms at Rome's Pasta Museum cover the cultural evolution of pasta, showcasing documents dating back to 1154 which prove that it was produced and consumed on a large scale already by the end of the 12th century. Exhibits explore the relationship between pasta, theatre and the arts, with amongst other things a series of paintings by contemporary artists (Crista, Latella, Scaglione, Penél, Di Rocco).

Engl - The Bacchae in 13 july 2009, Ercolano

The Dionysiac spirit of the director and coreographer Micha Von Hoecke at the "Festival of the vesuvian Villas". The vulcanic Belgian artist presents a new creation ispired to Euripides'puts on stage, in a particularly blunt way, human madness. I start from Agave's demency, who, possesed by the Dionysiac delirium, kills her son Pentheus to deny the divine nature of Dionysus, considering him a human being. This cult reject that subverts the schemes, roles and mixes genres, will be the cause of his perdition." Together with his company Ensemble, there are two divas on stage: Pamela Villoresi and Chiara Muti, which has made her debut with Von Hoecke himself with Monteverdi's Orpheus. There's eros, ambition, death and memory. In a few words, the sense, or non-sense, of life and theatre is narrated.
