Engl - Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" at the Ntfi in 7 july 2009, Naples
Written by Giacomo Puccini after the great success of Tosca, Madama Butterfly, the tree act japanese tragedy based on the libretto of Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giocosa, was a decidedly troubled composition. Begun in 1901 the intreruptions were numerous: the orchestration finally got under way in 1902 and was brought to an end in September of the following year, and only in December of 1903 could the opera be said to be complete in every part. Puccini chose the subject of his sixth opera after having assisted in London, in July 1900, on the one-act tragedy of the same name by David Belasco, in turn adapted from a story by the American John Luther Long of the title Madam Butterfly, which appeared in 1898. The first night took place on February 17th 1904 at the Scala, Milan. The staging by Fabio Sparvoli propposes an intimate interpretation of the work that respects the human reality of the characters and the tragic dimension of the event.
