Naples' San Carlo Theatre attracts international orchestras, performers and troupes. Built in 1737, it is the oldest working theatre in Europe and, barring the reconstruction and the 1872-1874 economic crisis, it has not interrupted its seasons in almost three centuries. Today the San Carlo is still bustling with activity. Besides staging frequent operas, ballets and concerts, it is also involved in several projects, including the reintroduction of operatic masterpieces from the 19th century and the ongoing attempt to restore the 18th-century opera buffa.
